The Grand Canyon University women’s soccer team won, 2-1, today against Academy of Art in San Francisco, Calif. The Antelopes are now 3-3-2 overall and 2-0-2 in the Pacific West Conference, while the Urban Knights fell to 2-6-0 and 0-4-0 in conference play.
The ‘Lopes won back-to-back games after opening the four game Northern California road trip with two double overtime ties.
GCU took 26 shots in the game and placed nine of those goals. GCU’s defense allowed just seven shots by the Urban Knights. The ‘Lopes were also afforded 11 corner kicks compared to just one taken by Academy of Art.
"I thought we came out to play today with a very good first half, going up 2-0 on 16 shots," said head coach Stevie Gill. "We had some great goals by Gabby (Gabriella) and Lina (Angelina) that helped us control the game. To their credit, Academy of Art came out hard in the second half looking to equalize. It wasn't until the 81st minute that they were able to score off a mistake at the back."
GCU’s offense provided enough support in the first half to secure the win, as they outshot Academy of Art by a margin of 16-5.
The ‘Lopes scored first when
Veronica Nikas had a long assist on a free kick to
Gabriella Zavala de Rojas, who successfully headed the ball into the back of the net in the 28
th minute to take an early lead.
Angelina Miraglio added another score for GCU before halftime after successfully converting an unassisted goal from 15 yards out on the right side in the 38
th minute.
GCU came out firing in the second half, taking eight consecutive shots before allowing one by the Urban Knights. This stretch took nearly 25 minutes off the clock as the ‘Lopes looked to hold their lead.
"It was interesting over the last few minutes with both teams pushing forward," said Gill. "I'm very pleased with the girls as we are still unbeaten in the conference with this 10-day Northern California roadtrip behind us."
The Urban Knights pulled within one on a goal with just over seven minutes remaining in the game. The ‘Lopes would not allow another shot by Academy of Art for the remainder of the contest.
"Now it is back to Phoenix and we are really looking forward to playing in front of a home crowd."
The ‘Lopes will now return home for five straight games, beginning with a contest against PacWest newcomer Azusa Pacific on Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
