The Grand Canyon University women’s soccer team lost, 1-0, tonight against Pacific West newcomer Azusa Pacific in Phoenix, Ariz. With the loss, the Antelopes are now 3-4-2 overall and 2-1-2 in PacWest play, while the Cougars are 4-5-0 overall and 3-2-0 in conference play.
The loss snapped a two-game win streak for the ‘Lopes, who returned from their four-game Northern California road trip with a 2-0-2 record.
The ‘Lopes were outshot by a margin of 13-9, despite holding Azusa Pacific to just three shots in the second half. Both teams placed five shots on goal.
The two teams went into the half scoreless, although Azusa Pacific held the advantage with 10 shots compared to three for GCU. ‘Lopes goalkeeper
Cat Lena had three saves in the first 45 minutes.
GCU came out aggressive in the second half, allowing just three shots. However, the Cougars were able to find the back of the net in the 74
th minute to record the lone score of the game. That would also mark the final shot of the contest for Azusa Pacific.
Gabriella Zavala de Rojas led the offensive charge for the ‘Lopes, taking four shots, including two that landed on goal. Lena completed her night with four saves.
The ‘Lopes will host Hawai’i Hilo on Wednesday at 8 p.m. on the GCU Soccer Field in the second game of their five-game homestand. GCU will face BYU-Hawaii on Saturday at 8 p.m.
