The Grand Canyon University women’s soccer team defeated Hawai’i Hilo, 1-0, tonight in Phoenix, Ariz. The Antelopes improved their overall record to 4-4-2 and their Pacific West Conference record to 3-1-2. The Vulcans are now 3-6-0 overall and 1-5-0 in conference play.
The game marked the third straight for GCU in which the contest was decided by just one goal. Overall, four of their games have been won by just one goal, while they have tied two others.
GCU held the advantage in shots, taking 19 compared to seven for Hilo. The ‘Lopes also placed eight of their shots on goal. GCU goalkeeper Cat Lena recorded a save against the lone Vulcan shot that landed on goal.
The two teams played evenly throughout most of the first half, as the ‘Lopes held a slight advantage in shots (6-5). GCU had four shots on goal compared to just one for the Vulcans.
GCU broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the final minute of the half, as
Jessica Fitzgerald found the back of the net on a free kick from
Martine Gjennestad.
GCU’s defense allowed just two shots by Hilo in the second half, while their offensive efforts saw them take 13 shots.
Gabriella Zavala de Rojas and
Sasha Scott each attempted four shots in the game, while Zavala de Rojas and
Celia Myers each placed two on goal.
GCU will next be in action when they host BYU-Hawaii on Saturday at 8 p.m. on the GCU Soccer Field. Following that contest, the ‘Lopes will have two remaining home games before making a quick one-game road trip.
