The Grand Canyon University women’s soccer team fell, 2-0, to No. 13 Cal State Los Angeles today in St. George, Utah in the last of their two games as part of the Dixie State Kickoff Classic.
The Antelopes had five shots for the game, including three on goal.
Jessica Fitzgerald,
Gabriella Zavala de Rojas and
Kelli Ford each collected a shot on goal.
"I'm exceptionally pleased with today's performance," said head coach Stevie Gill. "The final score wasn't a reflection of how we played. I was very disappointed in our work ethic in the first game so it was wonderful to see the team come back and play well today. We have some key players out with injuries and with many of the current squad playing out of position, it gave our young players a chance to show what they can do."
The Golden Eagles got on the board in the 33
rd minute on a penalty kick after a handball was whistled inside the penalty box. Janeth Arroyo nailed the shot for her first goal of the season. Cal State LA scored their second goal in the second period with just over 13 minutes off the clock on a shot by Adriana Valdez.
Cal State LA outnumbered the ‘Lopes with seven shots, six of which were on goal. GCU goalkeeper
Cat Lena had four saves during the contest, while the Golden Eagles had three saves from goalkeeper Gabriella Batmani.
"As long as we are moving in the right direction toward our goal of winning the conference and moving into the NCAA playoffs while building on every game, I am a happy coach," added Gill.
The ‘Lopes now return home for games against Colorado State University – Pueblo and Montana State Billings next Thursday and Saturday. Kickoff for both matches is slated for 8 p.m. on the GCU Soccer Field.
