The Grand Canyon University women’s soccer team won their home opener, 2-0, tonight against Colorado State University – Pueblo on the GCU Soccer Field. With the win, the Antelopes are now 1-2 on the season with one remaining non-conference match. The ThunderWolves are now 0-2.
The ‘Lopes were offense-minded for a majority of the game, as they outshot the ThunderWolves 42-7 and had 19 shots on goal compared to seven for Pueblo. GCU took 26 shots in the second half and scored their goals in the 46
th and 78
th minutes. GCU goalkeeper Cat Lena had four saves in the game.
Nicole Nsa and
Samantha Bush each recorded their first goals of the season tonight. Nsa was unassisted on her shot, while Bush got the assist from
Jessica Scarpati.
“It was an excellent exhibition of creating chances up front that was certainly needed,” said head coach Stevie Gill. “It was great to have Nicole back; I think she added a lot to the team in terms of putting herself into position to score. This was Nicole’s first game and it was so exciting to see her and Samantha put the ball in the back of the net. With Sam’s work ethic, she has been excellent every game and has been able to make an impact offensively.”
Nsa had 12 shots, five of which were on goal and
Veronica Nikas took five shots throughout the game, all of which were on goal. Overall, the ‘Lopes had 11 different players with a shot recorded.
The ‘Lopes will next be in action when they face off against Montana State University – Billings on Saturday at 8 p.m. on the GCU Soccer Field. Billings defeated fellow PacWest member Dixie State 2-0 in a neutral game earlier today.
“Billings is a good team and they look to get the ball down the field,” added Gill. “It should be an interesting game. We are not going to change anything from our standpoint. We just have to go out there and compete.
