The Grand Canyon University lacrosse program wrapped up an incredibly successful first season in MCLA Division II, advancing to the quarterfinals at the national tournament in Greenville, S.C.
Andrew Hunter led the Antelopes by being named the Southwestern Lacrosse Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He was also a Third Team MCLA All-America selection among goalies. Hunter finished the season with a 66.5 save percentage.
Richard Hunter earned Third Team MCLA All-America honors at defense. He scooped 46 ground balls during the season, playing in front of his brother, Andrew.
Fred Whistle was an Honorable Mention MCLA All-America selection as a face-off specialist. He captured 68.7 percent of his face-offs during the season and was second on the team with 47 ground balls.
Luciano DeDonatis earned high marks in the class room and was named a MCLA Division II Scholar Athlete. He was one of only 40 athletes over 100 schools to earn the award.
The Antelopes completed the 2012 campaign with a 15-2 record, which included a pair of seven-game winning streaks. GCU has accepted an invitation to play in MCLA Division I in 2013. The move will further develop in-state rivalries with Arizona State University and the University of Arizona, both whom will be in the same conference as the Antelopes.
