The Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s tennis teams lost to West Florida today in Pensacola, Fla.
The men, ranked No. 17 in the nation, lost to No. 2 West Florida, 7-2.
“The guys were trying to take out the No. 2 team in the country but got off to a rough start in the doubles,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “After being down 0-3 they fought for two singles victories and almost earned a third win by losing a third set match breaker 10-12.”
After falling behind 3-0 after the doubles round, GCU was able to rebound and take two of the six singles matches.
Peter Kazianschuetz won at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-2, while
Bastien Tonus won 7-5, 7-5 at the No. 5 singles slot.
The women, ranked No. 13 in D-II, lost 5-4 to No. 9 West Florida.
“The girls lost a heart-breaker against No. 9 West Florida today,” said Prudhomme. “I'm very proud of the fight and effort that they all left on the court. We played great in the doubles to get the 2-1 lead, but the other team did a great job to slow our momentum as the singles started. With the overall score 3-4 Cecilia and Justine were in the final sets of their singles trying to get us the win. We split those matches and fell a little short but it was an amazing match that lasted six hours!”
Priscilla Annoual picked up a win after her opponent at No. 1 singles retired. Annoual was up a set and 3-2 in the second at the time of the retirement. She also teamed with
Kaila Knopf to win 9-7 at No. 2 doubles.
Justine Majan and
Cecilia Vergnet won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles. Vergnet also won at No. 6 singles, winning in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.
“I'm very proud of both teams with the fight they left on the court today,” added Prudhomme. “They should learn much from the match and continue to improve.”
Both squads will be in action again tomorrow as they take on New Orleans in Pensacola. The men will also face Ouachita tomorrow.
