The Grand Canyon University tennis teams swept Valdosta State today in Pensacola, Fla.
The men, ranked No. 17 in the nation and No. 2 in the West Region, defeated Valdosta State, the No. 5 team in D-II, 5-4.
“The men beat the defending national champs who currently are ranked #5 in the country,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “This is the type of win we felt we were capable of when we were putting this team together and training, so it's great to get the job done. We've taken some tough losses against some tough teams but the exposure and experience we gained helped us get this win. To make it even better, the guys had to fight back from being down 1-2 after the doubles.”
Patrice Giraldi and
Peter Kazianschuetz led the Antelopes, both collecting two wins. The pair combined to win the No. 2 doubles match, 8-6. Giraldi also won the No. 3 singles tilt, 6-4, 6-2, while Kazianschuetz won the No.4 match by the same score.
Frederic Schoelzel, the No. 26 ranked singles player in D-II, won at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 7-5. Teammate
Bastien Tonus won in the No. 5 slot, 6-1, 6-2.
The win improves GCU’s overall record to 10-6.
The women defeated the Blazers, 5-4, to improve to 11-6. GCU is currently ranked No. 13 in D-II and No. 3 in the West Region.
“The women's win was equally impressive with the level and play and fight that Valdosta State brought to the match,” said Prudhomme. “It was very important that the girls earned the lead in the doubles. Freddie had a great day fighting back from 0-4 in the doubles to a 9-7 win with Kat. Freddie was also the last match on with the team match tied at 4-4 and was able to clinch. All of the players fought hard for the win today.”
Frederique Van de Velde and
Justine Majan both picked up a pair of wins today. Van de Velde teamed with
Katharina Mittag to record a 9-7 win at the top singles spot. The pair is currently ranked No. 21 in the nation. Van de Velde won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4 singles to clinch the match victory. Majan cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles and an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles with
Cecilia Vergnet.
Priscilla Annoual produced a dominant 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles.
Both squads will be in action again tomorrow as they take on West Florida. First serve in Pensacola is scheduled for 10 a.m.
