The Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s tennis teams swept St. Cloud State yesterday at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, Ariz.
Both the men and women improve to 8-2 this season.
“Both teams played great against St. Cloud,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “The team is doing a good job mentally taking care of matches that they are the favorites to win. For some of our returning players it is a little new to go into matches as the strong favorites. They have been used to being the underdogs so it’s nice to see them adjust and handle a different type of pressure.”
The No. 15 men had a clean 9-0 win, starting with a dominant doubles victory by Frederic Schoelzel and Stephane Murray in the No.1 spot defeating Matt Sturgeon and Tyler Hjalmquist 8-1.
The singles matches were highlighted by a 6-0, 6-0 victory by Patrice Giraldi at No. 2.
In the No.3 spot, Murray had a three-set battle to defeat Hjalmquist. After dropping the first set 3-6, Murray worked his back in it with a 6-3 victory and won the tie-breaker 11-9.
Bastien Tonus improved his winning streak to eight, beating Jordan Peterson 6-0, 6-1 at No.5 singles.
The No. 13 women defeated St. Cloud State 9-0.
Priscilla Annoual had a perfect day, defeating Cassandra Brown in the No.1 singles spot 6-0, 6-0 and picked up an 8-0 doubles win with partner Franziska Schmid at No. 2. Annoual improved her No.1 singles record to 4-0 and 9-1 overall.
Justine Majan ran her singles record to 10-0 after beating Catarin Franca 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 3 spot.
Cecilia Vergnet, No.6 singles, also recorded a 6-0, 6- 0 victory over St. Cloud’s Tori Marlton.
Both teams are back in action this Saturday, March 10 when they take on Colorado Mesa University at the Paseo Racquet Center starting at 11 a.m.
