The No. 7 Grand Canyon University lacrosse team fell last night to No. 16 Cal State Fullerton, 11-9, in Temecula, Calif.
The loss drops the Antelopes to 7-1 overall, 3-1 in the Southwest Lacrosse Conference. The Titans move to 11-3 overall, 3-0 in the league.
The game was tightly contested from the outset. Fullerton used a late first quarter goal to take an early 2-1 lead.
Freddie Matori scored the equalizer with 6:38 left in the half, but Fullerton scored with just under two minutes remaining to lead 3-2 at the break.
Chris McWilliams scored 2:14 into the third that tied the game at 3-3. After falling behind 5-3, GCU once again tied the game on goals from Matori (6:31) and McWlliams (5:51). Fullerton would win the faceoff following the McWilliams goal and score 31 seconds later to lead 6-5.
Sackett Keesen and
Luciano DeDonatis scored early in the fourth to tie the game at 7-7. Fullerton, however, would score three straight to put the game out of reach.
Carson Barton added two late goals to close out the game.
Today the ‘Lopes will stay in conference play with a game against Marymount College in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. The game will begin at 2 p.m.
