The Grand Canyon University tennis teams closed out the home portion of their 2012 regular seasons today at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, Ariz.
The women, ranked No. 13 in the nation and No.3 in the West Region, fell 5-2 to Montana. The men, ranked No. 15 in D-II and No.2 in the West Region, lost 4-3.
The women picked up wins from
Priscilla Annoual and
Justine Majan. Each needed a third set to pick up the victories. Annoual teamed with
Kaila Knopf to pick up an 8-4 win at the No.3 doubles match.
“The girls played great against D-I University of Montana,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “For the second straight day freshman, Priscilla Annoual won at the No. 1 singles position. Priscilla and fellow freshman, Justine Majan, came from a set down to win their singles matches. All of the girls fought very hard. Kaila Knopf has only played in two doubles matches this season and is now 2-0 against D-I competition. Splitting these two matches the last two days will get us ready for our next round of D-II matches in Florida.”
The men picked up wins from
Frederic Schoelzel,
Patrice Giraldi and
Peter Kazianschuetz. Giraldi and Kazianschuetz needed three sets to win at No.3 and No.4 singles, respectively.
“Frederic finished his home singles career undefeated after defeating his D-I singles opponent on senior day,” added Prudhomme. “It was a great day for two other seniors, Patrice and Peter, with come-from-behind singles wins in a narrow 3-4 loss to University of Montana. It would have been great to pull out one more win, but the guys finished the match with a strong fight.”
Next up is a trip to Pensacola, Fla. where the men will play four matches and the women three. Both teams will open the Florida trip with a match against Valdosta State on April 5.
