The Grand Canyon University baseball swept Academy of Art in a doubleheader tonight, winning 10-3 and 1-0, at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz.
GCU improves to 11-14 overall, 8-10 in the Pacific West Conference. Academy of Art falls to 0-21, 0-14 in the league.
The Antelopes jumped out quickly, scoring six runs on the benefit of five walks in the first inning.
Aaron Mees had a RBI single and
Ernesto Ortiz added a two-run single in the inning.
Academy of Art scored a pair of runs in the second, but GCU answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of their own.
Joey Bristyan reached on an error to start the inning and then stole second and third.
Michael Pomeroy brought Bristyan home with a single to center and would later score on a
Lucas Leifeld groundout.
Canyon would add a single run in the fifth on an Ortiz sacrifice fly and another run in the seventh on a Bristyan sacrifice fly.
Brady Wager (3-3) started and picked up the win for GCU. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits over 6.2 innings. Wager struck out four and walked four.
Sam Moore threw 2.1 scoreless innings in relief.
Pomeroy,
Derek Mendoza and Mees all finished with two hits.
Jorge Perez (1-2) dominated the nightcap, pitching a complete game 7.0 inning shutout. He allowed four hits and struck out seven. Perez retired 10-straight batters from the third through the sixth innings.
Mendoza led off the fourth inning with a single and moved to second on a
Charles Wagner sacrifice bunt. He would later advance to third on a Mees single and score the only run of the game on a wild pitch.
Mendoza finished the second game with two hits. He was 4-for-6 with two runs scored this evening and leads the team with a .477 batting average this season.
Grand Canyon is now 5-5 at home this season and is in a stretch where they are playing 16 of 17 games at Brazell Stadium.
The two teams will be back at it at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow for a doubleheader at Brazell Stadium.
