The Grand Canyon University baseball team spilt a doubleheader this afternoon with Academy of Art at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz. GCU dropped the first game 3-2, before rallying to win the nightcap 4-1. The Antelopes won three of the four games in the weekend series with the Urban Knights.
Grand Canyon now stands at 12-15 overall, 9-11 in the Pacific West Conference. Academy of Art closes the weekend with a 1-22 overall record, 1-15 in the league.
As was the case all weekend, GCU received strong outings from its pitching staff.
Justin Lindsey was the tough-luck loser in game one, allowing three runs (two earned) over 6.2 innings. He fanned six while walking only four.
Coltin White tossed 2.1 scoreless innings in relief.
GCU took a 1-0 lead in the first after
Nick Chapman led off the game with a double and later scored on a wild pitch. Art U answered with two runs on one hit to take a 2-1 lead in the second. The ‘Lopes tied it in the bottom half of the inning with a two-out rally.
Jackie Samora doubled down the line and scored on a
Harlyn Griffiths RBI single.
A pair of doubles in the fourth gave AAU the 3-2 advantage. GCU had the leadoff batter reach on a base hit in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to plate the tying run.
Samora led the offense in game one, collecting a pair of hits.
Coley Bruns and
Mark Jarrett combined to limit the Knights to one run on five hits in the nightcap. Jarrett (1-2) picked up his first win of the season after allowing only one hit over 3.0 innings.
Combined for the weekend, ‘Lopes pitchers recorded a 1.41 ERA (5 ER in 32.0 IP).
Trailing 1-0, the Antelopes tied the game in the fifth inning. Griffiths led off the inning with a shot high of the left field wall. As Griffiths was heading into third for what looked to be an inning-opening triple, Art leftfielder Myles Babitt’s throw to the infield sailed into the GCU dugout, allowing the tying run to score.
The ‘Lopes used a fit-hit barrage in the sixth inning to score three runs and secure the win.
P.J. Garcia led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Michael Pomeroy.
Derek Mendoza followed with a single that scored Garcia and gave GCU the 2-1 lead.
Charles Wagner followed with a RBI single and Lucas Leifeld followed with a RBI double to give Canyon the three-run cushion.
Grand Canyon remains at home next weekend with a four-game set with Hawai’i Hilo. The series will begin on Friday, March 23 with a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. The two schools will also play a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
