The Grand Canyon University baseball team picked up a pair of wins this evening, defeating Hawai’i Hilo 12-3 and 18-2 at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz.
The Antelopes improve to 14-15 overall, 11-11 in the Pacific West Conference. GCU has now won 10 of their last 14 games. Hilo falls to 5-22, 2-16 in the league.
“We played the type of baseball tonight that we have been trying to get our guys to embrace,” said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. “Put the ball in play on the ground and put pressure on the defense. We did that tonight. That is who we are. The guys did a nice job of battling all night long. It is encouraging, but we know we need to come back and do it all again tomorrow.”
The ‘Lopes started quickly in game one, scoring four runs on just two hits in the opening frame. The big hit of the inning came from
Tagg Duce and his two-run triple. GCU scored four more runs in the third to open an 8-1 lead.
Joey Bristyan accounted for most of the damage with a two-run single to center.
Ernesto Ortiz hit a three-run home run to left field to give Canyon an 11-1 lead after four innings.
Brady Wager (4-3) started and recorded the win. Wager allowed one run on four hits over 7.0 innings. He finished with seven strikeouts and three walks.
Kyle Weber came on to pitch a scoreless eighth.
“Brady was terrific night,” added Stankiewicz. “He is starting to understand keeping the ball down in the zone and pitching to contact.”
Ortiz finished the game with four RBI, tying his GCU career-best effort. Bristyan finished the game with two hits, as did teammate
Kyle Peterson who went 2-for-3 with two doubles.
The game featured eight hit batters, six by the Vulcan pitching staff.
As was the case in game one, GCU came out and dominated early. The Antelopes scored six runs in the first inning on four hits, two hit batters and a walk.
P.J. Garcia’s three-run double was the highlight of the inning.
Jackie Samora followed Garcia with an RBI double.
Grand Canyon upped their lead to 10-1 in the second after adding four runs four hits. The Antelopes then batted around for seven runs on six hits in the fifth to give them the 18-2 lead.
Coltin White (3-0) made a spot start for the ‘Lopes and held the Vulcans to two runs (one earned) on three hits over 4.0 innings.
Cody Repenning pitched two scoreless innings in his first action since March 1.
“Coltin did a fantastic job filling in for us tonight,” said Stankiewicz. “He still had a few too many walks. But he pitched us into the fifth and gave us a great effort and put us in a position where we could win the game.”
Nick Chapman led the offense in the nightcap, going 4-for-4 with three runs scored. Samora went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
Bristyan,
Derek Mendoza,
Lucas Leifeld and Ortiz all finished with two hits in game two.
The 19-hit attack in game two was the most in a game this season for GCU. They were also a season-best 11-for-21 with runners in scoring position during the game.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Brazell Stadium. For fans not able to attend the game, live stats will be offered at
