The Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s tennis teams fell to Fresno Pacific today in matches in Las Vegas, Nev.
“Both teams played well today, although they know they can play better and expect to play better as the week progresses,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “Fresno Pacific is a tough team and it was a great experience on the road to keep getting ready for postseason. There were a few moments in both matches that could have swung the match in our favor. I'm pleased that we could play a #1 team in the country that close but next time we want the win.”
The men, ranked No. 15 in D-II, dropped a 6-3 decision to the NAIA’s top-ranked squad in FPU. GCU falls to 9-3 overall.
Peter Kazianschuetz at the No. 4 singles and
Ahmad Saleem at the No. 6 singles picked up wins for GCU. The No.1 doubles team of
Frederic Schoelzel and
Stephane Murray won a thrilling 9-8 match.
The women, ranked No. 13 in D-II, also were defeated 6-3 by FPU, the No.2 squad in the NAIA. The Antelopes are now 9-3 overall.
The women received a pair of victories from
Cecilia Vergnet. Vergnet won her No. 6 singles match by a 6-1, 6-1 score. She teamed with
Justine Majan to win the No. 3 doubles 8-5.
Both squads return to action tomorrow where they will face critical conference/region matches with Hawai’i Pacific. The HPU women are currently ranked No. 2 in the West Region, with the guys holding down the third spot. First serve is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
