The Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s teams lost for the second-straight day in Las Vegas, Nev.
"These were tough matches to lose,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “Although we knew they would be great fights we expected to win. HPU played great and deserves the win. We will learn from it and make the adjustments we need to become stronger as he season progresses."
The Antelopes’ men’s side, ranked No. 1 in the west region, dropped a 6-3 decision to third-ranked Hawai’i Pacific.
GCU picked up wins on the singles side from
Frederic Schoelzel and
Peter Kazianschuetz. They also won the No. 3 doubles match behind
Ahmad Saleem and
Bastien Tonus .
The men now stand at 9-4 overall.
The women fell 7-2 to Hawai’i Pacific. HPU entered the match as the No.5 team in the nation and No. 2 team in the west region.
Cecilia Vergnet continued her stellar play, winning in straight sets at the No. 6 singles slot.
Justine Majan also won in straight sets, winning at No. 3 singles.
Priscilla Annoual and
Katharina Mittag both lost third-set tiebreaks today.
The women's overall record falls to 9-4.
The two squads will close out their stay in Las Vegas with matches against Armstrong Atlantic tomorrow. Armstrong is currently ranked third for the men and fourth for the women. First serve is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
