The 13th-ranked Grand Canyon University women's basketball team will open their 2012-13 home schedule with the GCU Tip-Off Classic. The Antelopes will welcome Eastern New Mexico, Humboldt State and Southern Nazarene for the two-day tournament. Fans can follow the action live by visiting www.gculopes.com.
AT GCU TIP-OFF CLASSIC: GCU is hosting the tournament for the third straight year. They are 4-0 over the course of that time, having defeated Queens College and Southern Indiana in 2010-11 and Nebraska-Kearney and Adams State last season.
IN THE POLLS: GCU is ranked 13
th in the
USA Today Sports/ESPN Division II Preseason Coaches’ poll (updated Oct. 31). GCU has been ranked among the top-20 teams in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Coaches Poll for 32 consecutive weeks dating back to the 2010-11 season.
LAST TIME OUT: GCU returned home from the Disney Classic with a 1-2 record. The ‘Lopes fell to Simon Fraser, 69-60, in the first game and bounced back to defeat No. 8 UC San Diego in a tightly-contested 64-62 game the next day. GCU fell to top-ranked Ashland, 83-55, on the final day.
BIG ON THE BOARDS: GCU has outrebounded their opponents, 114-109, through their first three games. Cindy Ekweozor leads the squad with 19 rebounds, averaging 6.3 rebounds per game.
DANIELS DOING WORK: Deanna Daniels, who missed a majority of last season with a knee injury, is GCU’s second-leading scorer with 9.3 points per game. She has recorded double-digit scoring in two of the Antelopes’ three regular season games, with a season-high 13 points on Nov. 9.
PRESEASON PACWEST PREDICTIONS: GCU was picked to finish atop the PacWest standings after receiving 11 of 14 possible first place votes, as decided by conference coaches. Maylinn Smith, the reigning conference Player of the Year, was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year.
PACWEST CHAMPS!: GCU captured the outright PacWest crown with a win over Dixie State on March 3, 2012, their fifth in the last six seasons. GCU’s win over Cal Baptist on March 1, 2012 secured the PacWest’s automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
ON THE HONOR ROLL: Trent May was named 2011-12 PacWest Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his five seasons at the helm of GCU women’s basketball. Maylinn Smith was named PacWest Player of the Year, while Jallisa Butler garnered PacWest First-Team honors. Smith was also named to the
Daktronics Second-Team West Region.
