The No. 13 Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team defeated Eastern New Mexico, 73-35, tonight in their first game of the GCU Tip-Off Classic, which also marked their first home game of the new season. The Antelopes are now 2-2 overall, while the Zias fell to 0-2.

GCU shot 39.7 percent for the game (27-for-68), while Eastern New Mexico posted a 30.6 fielding percentage (15-for-49). The ‘Lopes held a 51-30 rebounding margin, while also accruing 38 points in the paint and 34 points off turnovers.
The ‘Lopes forced a season-high 33 turnovers, their most since BYU-Hawaii had 34 on Feb. 20, 2012. The 35 points allowed by GCU marked the fewest since Chaminade scored just 33 points on Feb. 22, 2012.
Asha McDonnell led GCU rebounders with 11 rebounds and also added nine points.
Maylinn Smith was the leading scorer with 10 points.
The ‘Lopes shot 39.5 percent (15-for-38) in the first half while limiting Eastern New Mexico to a 23.1 mark (6-for-26). GCU scored 24 points in the paint, compared to just six for the Zias, and collected 20 points off of 15 Eastern New Mexico turnovers. GCU also held a substantial margin in rebounds, 33-14, in the first 20 minutes.
The Zias got on the board first with a three-pointer, but Maylinn Smith responded by scoring the next six points as the ‘Lopes went on a 14-2 run over the next six minutes. After a Zias basket, the ‘Lopes had an 8-0 stretch over the next minute and a half to build a 22-7 lead.
After the Zias scored four straight, GCU responded with another run, scoring seven consecutive points to give them an 18 point lead at the final media timeout of the half (29-11). The ‘Lopes led by as many as 24 before the Zias drained one of two free throws with 4.5 seconds remaining in the half as GCU took a 39-16 advantage into the locker room.
Jenna Pearson scored the first six points in the second half as the ‘Lopes used an 11-0 run to extend their lead to 50-16. GCU allowed only 19 Zias points in the final 20 minutes as they led by as many as 40 points. GCU shot 40.0 percent in the second half (12-for-30) and had 33 bench points throughout the contest.
The ‘Lopes will continue action at the GCU Tip-Off Classic tomorrow with a 6 p.m. game against Humboldt State at GCU Arena.
