Grand Canyon's regular-season home finale honored five senior players pregame and celebrated with a victory postgame after defeating San José State 65-52 on Saturday at Global Credit Union Arena.
The Lopes' third consecutive win clinched the sixth seed in the Mountain West Championship due to a New Mexico victory over Nevada.
Prior to the game, GCU head coach
Winston Gandy and the team honored five senior players and two senior student managers at midcourt. Those five players included
Anisa Jeffries,
Ale'jah Douglas,
Casey Valenti-Paea,
Karley Johnson and
Favor Ayodele.
A rematch of what was GCU's first-ever Mountain West win saw both teams struggle to score in the first quarter, which opened with three shutout minutes before the first score came from San José State (4-26, 2-17 MW).
Down 9-2 with just under five minutes to play in the first, the Lopes' offense eventually started to gel, scoring 12 straight points with four coming from junior
Sifa Ineza.
The GCU offense's best quarter came in the second, finishing five points shy of its second-quarter season high with 23 points, leading 37-27 at the break.
After first-quarter woes from beyond the arc (1 of 8), GCU poured in five 3-pointers from three Lopes in the second. Freshman
Diamond Wright swished back-to-back 3s to close out the half, topping her season high with 11 first-half points.
The rhythm of the game maintained course from second to third quarter, where the Lopes opened on an 11-6 run and led 51-33 at the under-four-minute mark. The Spartans closed the gap to 53-40 at the end of the third and opened up the fourth with seven straight points to force a GCU timeout.
San José State orchestrated a 14-2 run to keep afloat as time inched closer to regulation ending. The scoring spell was broken by Johnson, who knocked down a jumper and four straight free throws to regain the double-digit advantage.
Wright finished with four 3s and 18 points in just 14 minutes off the bench. Sophomore
Chloe Mann had nine points, six rebounds and two assists while junior
Julianna LaMendola added eight rebounds and six points.
GCU pulled down 45 rebounds, giving it 89 boards over its last two games. The Lopes are 6-0 when posting 41 boards or more.
GCU is back on the floor Tuesday at Wyoming for the regular-season finale. Tipoff is at 5 p.m. Phoenix time on the Mountain West Network.
