The Grand Canyon University lacrosse team trailed throughout today, falling 12-7 to Adams State in Alamosa, Colo.
The loss drops GCU’s overall record to 3-10, 2-5 in Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.
It was the second meeting this season between the two squads, with the Antelopes winning 10-8 on March 14 in Phoenix.
The Grizzlies scored the first four goals of the game and did not hold a smaller lead than three goals.
Kyle Bailey scored with 1:08 remaining in the first period to get the ‘Lopes on the scoreboard. For Bailey, it was his 11
th tally of the season.
Kahai Sibley picked up his first of two goals, scoring with 4:49 remaining in the second period to send the game to intermission with GCU trailing 6-2.
Fred Whistle broke a nine minute scoreless drought to open the third period, burying a shot with 6:50 left in the frame. The Grizzlies, however, scored 12 seconds and 25 seconds later to open an 8-3 lead after three periods.
Both teams would score four goals in the fourth, highlighted by GCU’s Konner Klein, who picked up his 13th and 14th goals of the season.
Andrew Hunter started in goal for the Antelopes and made 16 saves.
Adams State outshot GCU, 45-34, while holding a 66-64 ground ball edge. The Grizzlies dominated the face-offs, winning 15-of-21.
Grand Canyon returns home for their final game of the 2011 campaign where they will host Dominican at 1:00 p.m. on April 16 at GCU Field in Phoenix.
Earlier this week, Grand Canyon University
announced that the lacrosse program will compete in MCLA beginning next season.
