'Lopes Fall to Pace

Pace University scored three goals in the first and third periods and won, 8-5, over Grand Canyon University today at the GCU Soccer Field.
The Antelopes fell to 0-2. It was the Setters' season opener.
Junior midfielder Kevin Kadlick had three goals, sophomore attack Tom Earl two and freshman attack William Scoscia, junior midfielder John Kolesar and junior defender Peter Nieporent one apiece for Pace. Scoscia also had three assists.
Sophomore midfielder Kyle Bailey (Golden, CO/Golden) recorded a hat trick for the GCU, scoring in the second period and twice in the fourth. Freshman midfielder Carson Barton (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada/St. Francis Xavier Prep) assisted on the first goal. The other two were unassisted.
The 'Lopes' other goals were scored by junior midfielder Noah Bill (Cleveland, OH/St. Ignatius Prep) and freshman midfielder Josh Drummond (East Grand Rapids, MI/East Grand Rapids). Those goals also were unassisted.
GCU held a 28-18 advantage in groundballs in the game. Turnovers were about even, 16 for the 'Lopes to 14 for the Setters, as were faceoffs (GCU 9-of-17, Pace 8-of-17) and clears (GCU 18-of-21, Pace 24-of-25).
Only two penalties were called, both for slashing against Pace.
The Setters were picked to finish fifth in the Northeast-10 Conference in the 2011 preseason coaches' poll after finishing 7-7 overall, 6-2 in the Conference last season. Senior defender Pat Joyce was named to InsideLacrosse.com's Division II All-America Second Team.
The NE-10 is one of the nation's toughest lacrosse conferences, as evidenced by the five Conference players selected to the 2011 preseason Division II All-America First Team.
GCU plays two-time defending D-II national champion C.W. Post at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at the GCU Soccer Field.
