Tennis Teams Narrowly Lose to D-II Powerhouse Hawai'i Pacific

The GCU men's team almost shocked the D-II tennis nation today by narrowly losing to Hawai’i Pacific University, the No. 1 team in the West Region and No. 11 nationally ranked team. We were toe to toe with the Sea Warriors until the last match was finished. I can't say enough about the turnaround that these guys have made to our program. We were last in the region last year as a second-year program and were within one line win of beating one of the best teams in the country.
In a second match of the day, GCU defeated No. 34 Sonoma State. We've been doing it since we took the court this season, but we made another huge statement by beating a nationally ranked team on the same day that we pushed HPU to the end. Our guys are showing so much effort and heart on the court. It’s a pleasure to coach and watch.
The GCU women's tennis team was equally impressive in its hard-fought 3-6 loss to the HPU women, who are No. 7 in the country. Not many people expected that we would win at No. 1 doubles and win on two singles courts against them; our girls expected it because we were playing to win. I'm very proud of how hard the girls fought on the court. We will learn as much as we can from this loss and keep working to become one of the best teams in the country.
