The men's and women's tennis teams were a combined 3-1 on a day with two doubleheaders. Today was a physical and mental challenge with the number of matches and level of competition we were up against; we showed up at the courts at 9 a.m. and left the courts at 10:30 p.m.
The women's team was able to add two wins to its stats in one day. It beat Dallas Baptist University by a score of 6-3 in the morning and then with one hour of rest took the courts again to defeat tough PacWest opponent San Francisco Academy of Art by the same score. The girls showed much strength to play back to back dual matches with one hour of rest in between. We went a perfect 6-for-6 in doubles today, which is a good representation of our team chemistry. I am really happy with the improvement that many of our players have made in just the first five matches of our season.
The GCU men's tennis team started its day off with a 7-2 win over Dallas Baptist. It was a real team effort as we used five different players in singles play after sweeping all three doubles courts. Everybody is playing with more confidence and the players are expecting to win when they walk on the court. The big match of the day was round two against UCSD. The men competed with everything they had against one of the best teams in the country and fell one match short. The 'Lopes split the singles matches 3-3 after trailing 1-2 in the doubles for a final score of 4-5. We couldn't have come much closer to beating another great team. We are making a habit of winning and with a little more experience we can beat a top 10 team.
The 'Lopes take the court again at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The women play PacWest opponent Chaminade and the men play the No. 1 team in the central region, Western New Mexico University.
