The Grand Canyon University lacrosse team crushed Northern Arizona University, 24-8, today at the GCU Soccer Field.
It was the Antelopes' second victory in three games against club teams this season. They defeated Nevada-Las Vegas, 9-8, on Feb. 13, and lost to Minnesota-Duluth, 11-4, on March 17. Both games were played at GCU.
UNLV, Minnesota-Duluth and NAU are members of the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association, a national organization of non-varsity, men's college lacrosse programs. The Lumberjacks belong to Division 2 of the MCLA's Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference. The NCAA does not recognize games played between its member schools and those that compete in the MCLA.
The 'Lopes' record against NCAA competition this season is 2-7.
Today was Senior Day, and GCU's two seniors, attack Scott Franks (Lakewood, OH/St. Ignatius) and defender Ryan Jackson (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) were honored before the game. Franks, the team captain, started all 13 games last season, tallied 49 points and ranked in the top 20 in Division II in assists per game. Jackson, one of only two players who have been with the program since its inception three years ago, played baseball at GCU before turning his attention to lacrosse.
Franks, Jackson and their teammates made sure their last home game was a memorable one. Freshman attack Konner Klein (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) had seven goals, sophomore attack Jacob Hippensteel (Chandler, AZ/Chandler) had four and junior attack Billy Lloyd (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) had three. Franks had two goals and six assists.
The 'Lopes have two games left this season, against Dominican University of California at 7 p.m. on April 16 and against Westminster College at 1 p.m. on April 17. Both games are in San Rafael, Calif.
