Sophomore attack Jacob Hippensteel (Chandler, AZ/Chandler) scored with 1:32 remaining in overtime to lift the Grand Canyon University lacrosse team to a 10-9 win over Westminster College on the second day of the Baggataway Cup today in San Rafael, Calif.
It was Hippensteel's third goal of the game. Senior attack Scott Franks (Lakewood, OH/St. Ignatius), in his final game for the Antelopes, also tallied three goals.
GCU finished 3-8 against NCAA competition this season. Westminster, an NAIA school, is 9-4.
The 'Lopes led 3-1 after the first period and 6-2 at halftime. Other than the score, the first-half statistics were even. GCU led in saves (9-8), ground balls (17-12) and face-offs (5-8), while Westminster was ahead in shots (20-19) and clears (15). The 'Lopes had four turnovers, two fewer than the Griffins.
Westminster came out firing in the second half, scoring three goals in the third period and four in the fourth, including one with just 13 seconds left in the game to send it into overtime. GCU found the back of the net once in the third period and twice in the fourth.
The Griffins had a 12-6 shot advantage in the third period and a 25-4 edge in the fourth. The 'Lopes turned the ball over 12 times in the second half; Westminster did so just four times.
In addition to the six combined goals from Hippensteel and Franks, the 'Lopes got goals from junior attack Billy Lloyd (Tucson, AZ/Sabino), freshman attack Konner Klein (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain), freshman attack John Casmedes (Plano, TX/Plano West Senior) and sophomore midfield Trey Whistle (Springdale, AZ/Her-Ber).
There were no assists on any of GCU's goals.
Sophomore goalie Andrew Hunter (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) had 18 saves.
The 'Lopes were penalized eight times for nine minutes, while the Griffins committed just three penalties for 1:30.
Addendum:
