The third-ranked Mercyhurst College lacrosse team scored 10 goals in the first half en route to a 14-3 victory over Grand Canyon University today at Tullio Field in Erie Pa.
The Lakers improved to 7-0, while the Antelopes fell to 2-7, not counting games against club teams.
GCU scored once in the second period and twice in the third period. The goals were scored by sophomore attack Jacob Hippensteel (Chandler, AZ/Chandler), assisted by senior attack Scott Franks (Lakewood, OH/St. Ignatius); freshman attack John Casmedes (Plano, TX/Plano West Senior), unassisted; and Hippensteel again, assisted by freshman attack Konner Klein (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain).
Sophomore goalie Andrew Hunter (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) made 14 saves, including six in the first period.
Eleven different players scored for Mercyhurst, led by Kyle Kallay, Brett McClelland and Cameron McLean with two goals each.
The Lakers outshot the 'Lopes, 39-21, and picked up 16 more ground balls (37-21). Mercyhurst won 13 of 20 face-offs and was successful on 16 of 20 clears, as opposed to GCU's 14 of 25. Neither team did well on extra-man opportunities; the Lakers were 0 for 8, while the 'Lopes were 0-for-1.
GCU had 27 turnovers; Mercyhurst had16. The 'Lopes committed eight penalties for six minutes, while the Lakers had just one penalty for one minute.
GCU faces another East Coast Conference team, Seton Hill University (2-3), tomorrow in Greensburg, Pa.
