POMONA, Calif. -- Grand Canyon (18-15) earned a doubleheader and series split with Cal Poly Pomona Sunday.
GCU split the series 2-2. On Sunday, it lost the opener 13-11 and won the second game 5-3.
In Game 2, junior
Justin McKee (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) picked up his first Canyon win. Senior
Billy Schroeder (Muskego, Wisc./Muskego) had a two-run double in the fifth and had a key sacrifice bunt in each of the other Antelope scoring innings.
GCU scored first, taking a 1-0 second-inning lead. Schroeder's first sac bunt followed a single from freshman
Trevor Santor (Glendale, Ariz./Ironwood). Santor scored on a triple by sophomore shortstop
P.J. Garcia (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird).
Tied 1-1, GCU scored two in the fourth.
Joey Jacobson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) led off with a single and Santor followed by reaching on a bunt single. Schroeder moved both runners over and Garcia was walked, intentionally. Grand Canyon took a 2-1 lead on a sacrifice fly by freshman catcher
Danny Bethea (San Diego, Calif./La Costa Canyon). A single from freshman
Ryan Jones (Scottsdale, Ariz./Sunnyslope) scored Santor.
In the fifth, Jacobson doubled, Santor was hit by a pitch and Schroeder knocked them both in with a double.
In the opener, Canyon took a 6-5 lead with a four-run third inning. Senior
Jay Green (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon), Jacobson, Garcia and Schroeder all had single. Jacobson, Garcia and Schroeder each had RBIs with their base knocks. Bethea drove in one with a ground out.
Battling back for a second time, GCU tied the game 11-11 with a five-run sixth inning.
Three runs scored on a bases-loaded three-base error by the Pomona center fielder off the bat of Garcia. Sophomore
Joey Bristyan (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) and Bethea had the only hits of the inning, both singles. Bethea drove in one with his hit. Green also had an RBI on a sac fly.
