Grand Canyon continues a 10-game homestand, welcoming in UNLV for a three-game series that starts on Friday at 6 p.m.
All three games will stream on Mountain West Network, with Saturday and Sunday's games also airing on Arizona's Family Sports.
3 THINGS TO KNOW
- STANDINGS WATCH: GCU and UNLV enter the series tied for seventh in the nine-team MW, with a serious opportunity for the winning team to make moves in the standings. The top six clubs will qualify for next month's MW Championship in Mesa, Arizona.
- TURN IT: GCU has turned 30 double plays on the season, a mark that ranks 17th nationally and leads the Mountain West.
- OFFENSIVE SURGE: GCU has scored 60 runs over its last eight games (7.5 per game) while batting roughly .315, a significant jump from its 4.8 runs per game season average and .254 team batting average. The Lopes have recorded 10+ hits in six of those eight games and 5+ runs in seven, fueled by 15 doubles, four home runs and 37 hits with runners on base.
SCOUTING UNLV
UNLV enters the week at 18-14 and 3-6 in MW play, placing the Rebels in the lower half of the league standings through the first three conference weekends. The Rebels' profile is largely offense: they are averaging 9.6 runs per game with a .323 team batting average, while the pitching staff has worked to an 8.18 ERA . Recent MW results include dropping its opening league series at Air Force, winning two of three from San José State at home, then going 1-2 against New Mexico last weekend. UNLV is coming off a midweek victory at No. 20 Arizona State on Wednesday.
Under Stan Stolte, now in his 11th season, UNLV's program has had some conference contention pushes when the offense clicks. The Rebels are coming off a 31-23 season and 16-14 in conference play, good for fourth place, before exiting the Mountain West Championship in the opening round. UNLV has 11 all-time NCAA Tournament appearances and four conference regular-season titles, though its last regional trip came in 2014.
