Senior has walked only six in 52 innings
GCU senior Jeff Urlaub (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon/Arizona State/UNLV) threw his third complete game and second shutout of the season in a 5-0 victory against Hawai'i at Hilo in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader split at Brazell Stadium Friday.
The Antelopes dropped the second game 7-4. GCU is 19-16 overall and 10-8 in the PacWest. The teams meet again 1 p.m. Saturday at Brazell Stadium for another doubleheader.
Urlaub (3-2) fanned six, scattered five hits and did not walk a batter. He has walked only six this season in 52 innings, while striking out 45. He's ERA dropped to 2.77.
"He has great command (of his pitches)," said GCU skipper Dave Stapleton. "He knows what he's doing out there (on the mound) and he's a great competitor. It's a comforting feeling when he's out on the mound and it's been nice to have him around this year. We're hoping his competitiveness and work ethic rubs off on our younger pitchers."
Only two runners reached scoring position against the left-hander. One Vulcan runner reached third base, but it came with two outs in the fourth inning. Urlaub got out of the semi-jam quickly by striking out Kalehua Moniz to end the inning. He retired the last five faced and did not give up a hit after Cody Barrett's fourth-inning two-out single.
GCU scored one run each in the third, fourth and fifth innings. All came on two-out doubles. All five of the Antelope runs came with two outs.
In the third, sophomore second baseman Gavin Tucker (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert) led off with a single. He moved to second on a sac bunt, to third on a ground out and scored on a double by junior right fielder Tyler Bair (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado). In the fourth, sophomore shortstop P.J. Garcia (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) had a one-out single. He moved up on a ground out and scored on a double by freshman catcher Danny Bethea (San Diego, Calif./La Costa Canyon). In the fifth inning, senior third baseman Jay Green (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon/New Mexico) reached on a walk, moved to second on a balk and scored on a two-out double by senior designated hitter Colin Courtland (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium).
Two more Antelope runs came across in the sixth. With two outs, sophomore center fielder Joey Bristyan (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) and Green reached on walks. Both moved up a base on a balk. Bair's infield single scored Bristyan and an errant throw gave Green a chance to score.
Bair finished the game with three of GCU's eight hits.
In the second game, GCU left 14 runners on base. It left the bases loaded in the first, third and fifth innings, left two on in the seventh and one each in the second, fourth and sixth.
"We had a chance," said Stapleton. "We made (Hilo starter John Holley) throw over 120 pitches. We made him work, but we weren't scoring runs off him.
"Anytime you see 14 left on base, there's a reason why you get beat."
After a five-run fifth, Hilo took a 6-1 advantage. The 'Lopes answered with three in their half of the fifth.
Again, all runs were scored with two outs, but the bases were left loaded. Junior first baseman Joey Jacobson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) had a one-out single and pinch-hitter Trevor Santor (Glendale, Ariz./Ironwood) had a two-out infield hit. Bethea followed with a two-run double. Tucker and Bristyan each got on after being hit by a pitch and Green drove in one with a single.
