Tyler Bair (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) continued to have a hot bat in Grand Canyon's 8-4 Pacific West Conference victory over Hawai'i Hilo in the first game of a doubleheader at Brazell Stadium Saturday.
The junior right fielder had his team-best sixth three-hit game and drove in four runs in the Game 1 victory. GCU lost the second game 8-5.
Canyon is 20-17 overall and 11-9 in the PWC. Hilo is 7-18 and 3-13. The teams finish the five-game series with a non-conference contest Sunday at noon.
"He's really putting it together and coming of age," said GCU skipper Dave Stapleton of Bair, who improved his average to .382, his RBI total to a team-best 28. "Hope he keeps it up and makes a push at the end of the year. All (the players) need to do that."
Bair's RBI-single put GCU on the board in the first inning. He added an RBI-single in the fourth and stolen base and hit his second home run of the season -- a two-run shot -- in the sixth. He also had an assist throwing out Hilo's John Hoffman at the plate in the sixth.
Sophomore center fielder
Joey Bristyan (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) had a pair of walks; runs scored and sacrifice bunts in the win. Junior first baseman
Joe Jacobson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) went 2-for-3 with an RBI. He leads the team in multi-hit games with 11.
Sophomore shortstop
P.J. Garcia (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) had an RBI-double in the three-run first, while sophomore second baseman
Gavin Tucker (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert) drove in the 'Lopes first run in the two-run fourth.
Junior lefty
Justin McKee (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) earned his second straight win, pitching six innings. Freshman
Brady Wager (Globe, Ariz./Globe) got his second save.
In the second game, GCU rallied in the seventh for three runs, but it wasn't enough.
Off the bench, junior outfielder
R.J. Etchebarren (Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley) had two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
