'Lopes win five-game series
Grand Canyon outscored Hawai’i at Hilo 20-12 to win the decisive game of their five-game series at Brazell Stadium Sunday.
Grand Canyon (21-17) pounded out 23 hits. Junior right fielder Tyler Bair (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) and freshman catcher Danny Bethea (San Diego, Calif./La Costa Canyon) each had four hits. Bair had two doubles, a home run and four RBIs. Junior first baseman Joe Jacobson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) and senior third baseman Jay Green (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) each had three hits and four RBIs.
Senior reliever Chris Shelley (Phoenix, Ariz./St. Mary’s) earned the win and senior Mark Hardy (Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork) got the save.
Playing the fifth game in three days, neither squad had its full allotment of pitchers. An injury to GCU starter Danny Skelly (Elmwood Park, Ill./St. Joseph's/Chandler-Gilbert) put a little extra pressure on the Antelopes. Junior William Armjio (Gallup, N.M./Paradise Valley) threw four and one-third innings of relief to help the 'Lopes catch up after Hilo scored six first-inning runs. Hardy closed out the game by giving up just one run in the final three and two-third innings. Hardy and Armijo both threw in relief Friday.
Grand Canyon had two eight-run innings. Its eight-run third made it 12-6 GCU and after Hilo cut it to 12-11, the 'Lopes added eight more in the seventh.
All nine starters had a hit by the third inning and all 10 players that came to the plate had at least one hit.
In his first GCU start, junior center fielder R.J. Etchebarren (Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley) had three hits, three runs scored and an RBI.
Freshman Trevor Santor (Glendale, Ariz./Ironwood) had two hits and three runs scored. Designated hitter Billy Schroeder (Muskego, Wisc./Muskego) drew four walks.
GCU is off until an April 9-10 four-game PacWest series at Academy of Art.
