Urlaub dominates in 4-hit shutout
MORAGA, Calif. -- Senior pitcher Jeff Urlaub (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) threw his third shutout of the season in the opener and junior outfielder Tyler Bair (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) had four hits and four RBIs in the second to lead Grand Canyon to a doubleheader sweep of Academy of Art in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Louis Guisto Field Friday.
Urlaub gave up just four hits and struck out five in a 7-0 win. He is 4-2 on the season. It was his fourth complete game of the season.
In the second game, GCU had 15 runs on 14 hits in a 15-5 win. Bair went 4-of-5 with three singles and a double. Sophomore shortstop P.J. Garcia (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) went 2-of-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs.
GCU improved to 23-17 overall and 13-9 in the PacWest.
The teams meet again Saturday for two games starting at 10 a.m.
In the opener, GCU got all the runs it needed in a two-run first. With one out, senior third baseman Jay Green (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) doubled. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Bair. Senior designated hitter Colin Courtland (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium) followed with an RBI-double and started a two-run third with a solo home run.
Urlaub gave up four singles and walked only one. He dropped his ERA to 2.44. In 59 innings pitched, he’s walked only seven this season while striking out 50.
In game two, GCU scored three in the first, two in the second and five in the third to jump out to a 10-1 lead.
Freshman catcher Danny Bethea (San Diego, Calif./La Costa Canyon) got his first collegiate home run in the victory. Green had two sacrifice flies.
