It was a crazy weekend with the cancelled matches, the rain, the waiting, and then finally being able to play - complete with a great result for both teams. We showed up at the Whittier courts at 10:30am and left at 7:30pm. After both teams spent almost two hours drying the courts with towels, mops, and brooms we finally got underway around 12:15. After a long day of mopping and tennis, both teams came out victorious.
Our women never let Whittier in the match getting to quick leads at #1 and #2 doubles. After doubles we led 3-0 and continued the momentum into the singles by sweeping all of the courts. We had 3 new doubles combinations and they seemed to click well with each other. It was nice to see our 3 returning starters play with experience and it was nice to see Cecilia, Kaila, and Ali win their first NCAA singles dual match play.
On the men's side we also had three players play and win their first NCAA dual singles matches. Patrice Giraldi at #1, Szymon Gas, at #2, and Will Herbert at #5. The men were down 1-2 after doubles play. All 3 teams were playing for their first time together, but showed strong signs of teamwork.
We dropped down to 4-1 after losing at #3 and #6 singles, before Patrice, Will and Szymon won at #1, #2, and #5 to tie the score at 4-4. Brian Kirby was the last match on. leading by a set and trailing by a break of serve, 3-4. It looked like he was about to go into 3 sets when he won the next 3 games to close out the match and give GCU the 5-4 victory. The men did extremely well and showed great attitude and effort to win on the road, with multiple rain delays, and come from behind to win the programs first NCAA dual match in over 20 years. (It was the first dual match win for GCU against a 4-year school since the men's tennis program was reinstated last year after 22 years without a team.)
It was exactly what the doctor ordered to start off the season for this new men's tennis program.
