The Grand Canyon University men's tennis team came within two games and two points from beating a perennial top team in the West Region, Hawai'i Hilo. Brian Kirby and Eric Schroeder were two points from serving for the match at No. 2 doubles before falling, 8-6. Team captian Szymon Gas was two points from the win at eight points all in the third set match tie-breaker before falling, 10-8. If these two close losses went the other way, along with winning at No. 3 doubles by Szymon Gas and Sebastian Guevara, Brian Kirby at No. 4 singles, and GCU No. 1 Patrice Giraldi, then GCU would have had a major win in men's tennis.
The 3-6 overall loss was very telling of our improvement this year. Furthermore, Giraldi is now at a 4-3 winning record at the No. 1 position with his win against Kevin Tamura, who is ranked No. 7 in the West Region. Another highlight for the men's team was Gas and Guevara moving to 4-1 together at the No. 3 doubles position. I'm very proud of the performance that these guys were able to achieve in their six match in five days.
The GCU women evened their overall win with a convincing 8-1 win over Montana State Billings. Stephanie Haldeman and Cecilia Vergnet were able to repeat wining at the No. 1 doubles spot and No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots two days in a row. Other strong performances came from new Antelope players Kailo Knopf and Ali Brackey at the No. 4 and No. 6 singles spots with straight-set wins. Amanda Jackson stepped in for an injured Stefanie Griffin at No. 3 doubles for a win with Brackey. By far, the most dramatic matches of the season came at the No. 1 and No. 5 singles spots. At No. 1 singles, Cecilia Vergnet won 10-3 in the third set match tie-breader in a four-hour contest. This is the longest singles match I've witnessed in my three years coaching at GCU. And, amazingly, on the same day, Mandy Prudhomme (my wife) gave me a Valentine's present by saving 10 match points (yes, that was 10 match points!) in her 18-16 win in the third set match tiebreaker at No. 5 singles. The girls showed a lot of heart on Valetntine's Day by fighting so hard to even our win-loss record at 3-3.
