GCU tennis had a rough start to their five day series at the Paseo Racquet Center. They opened their series with a loss against the top ranked BYU-Hawai'i Seasiders. Do not let that fool you, the 'Lopes fought a battle to be proud of.
The Lady 'Lopes faced an 0-9 loss against #1 ranked BYU in the conference. They fought hard but were unable to pull out a win. Kaila Knopf (FR, Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle HS) and Stefanie Griffin (JR, Scottsdale, AZ/Pinnacle HS) both took a number of games off their opponents, making the Seasiders work for their win. Coach Prudhomme spoke only of the team's "dramatic improvements in their competitiveness with one of the perennial tennis powerhouses of the PacWest conference."
The men's team fought hard but ended with a 2-7 loss. Both wins were by default at #3 doubles and #6 singles. Sophomore Patrice Giraldi (pictured, France) made his teammates proud with his star performance against BYU's nationally ranked Rong Ma. Even though it ended in a loss, the battle proved GCU tennis is on the rise. Prudhomme admitted "[he] didn't think that in the second year of our men's tennis team that we could compete this well with BYU-Hawai'i."
Even with the tough losses, the 'Lopes are ready for more.
