The Grand Canyon University men’s soccer team, ranked No. 3 in the West Region in the official NCAA poll and No. 4 in the region in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America vote, beat Pacific West Conference rival Dixie State College 2-0 tonight at the GCU Soccer Field.
It was the second time in a week that the Antelopes defeated the Red Storm. They beat them 3-0 on Monday in St. George, Utah.
GCU improved to 11-2-1 overall, 9-1-0 in the PacWest, while Dixie State fell to 5-8-1, 4-5-1.
Junior midfielder Cordero Young (Orlando, FL/Central Florida Christian Academy, Tyler Junior College) gave the ‘Lopes a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute when the ball was deflected off of Red Storm goalkeeper Tyler Walters and Young kicked the rebound into the right side of the net.
Sophomore forward Kyle Ciliento (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle, Saint Mary’s College of California) made the score 2-0 in the 43rd minute when senior midfielder Joao Vieira (Amparo, Brazil, Barbosa, Marshalltown CC) had a great through ball from midfield, Ciliento ran to it and kicked it on the ground into the back of the net.
Senior goalkeeper Ben Paneccasio (Sydney, Australia/Rosebank College, Tyler Junior College) made three saves and posted his eighth shutout of the season.
GCU had an 8-6 advantage in shots in the game. The Red Storm held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Twenty-one fouls were called, 12 of which were against the ‘Lopes.
Six yellow cards were issued, four of them on Dixie State.
According to NCAA statistics through games of Oct. 17, GCU ranks 17th out of 177 teams in won-lost-tied percentage (.792), 18th in scoring offense (2.58 goals per game), 21st in shutout percentage (0.5), 25th in total goals (31) and 36th in team goals-against average (0.9).
Ciliento, the 2009 Pacific West Conference Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, leads the nation in points per game (2.58) and goals per game (1.17). He also is fourth in total goals (14; he now has 16) and fifth in total points (31; he now has 35, which ties him with the national leader, Washington Adventist’s Erik Gutierrez).
Senior midfielder Harvey Martinez (Miami, FL/Coral Gables, Marshalltown CC) ranks 23rd in the country in assists (23).
Paneccasio is 36
th nationally in goals-against average (0.9).
