The Grand Canyon University men's soccer team, ranked No. 1 in the West Region and No. 19 in the nation in the official NCAA Division II poll, lost to Seattle Pacific University 3-0 in a nonconference game today at Interbay Stadium in Seattle.
Junior midfielder Tyler Schultz, a Scottsdale native and former high school teammate of GCU sophomore forward
Kyle Ciliento (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle, Saint Mary's College of California), scored two goals for the Falcons.
His first goal came in the 37th minute, when he got control of a loose ball, turned and sent it to the upper-right corner of the net from 12 yards out. It was his fifth goal of the season.
He scored his second goal in the 53rd minute. Sophomore defender Brandon Kuenzl threw the ball in to junior defender Elliot Morton, who flicked the ball to Schultz. Schultz scored from 6 yards out.
SPU extended its lead to 3-0 in the 64th minute, when Morton headed in the ball off of a 40-yard free kick by junior defender Dillon Ballard.
Sophomore goalkeeper Zach Johnson recorded his fifth shutout of the season.
Both teams had 11 shots in the game, but only two of the 'Lopes' were on goal vs. four for the Falcons.
GCU had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks, and each team was issued one yellow card.
A total of 22 fouls were called, 16 of which were on SPU.
The 'Lopes, who also are ranked No. 3 in the West Region and No. 19 in the nation in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, fell to 9-2-1 overall, 8-1-0 in the Pacific West Conference. The Falcons improved to 5-6-2.
"After the first goal, we had possession but we were not dangerous offensively," GCU Head Coach Petar Draksin said. "On the first opportunity they had, they scored a goal. The guy was wide open in the box and scored. That goal shocked us because we were playing very well, passing the ball around and playing pretty soccer. But that's soccer. When you don't mark, you lose.
"In the second half, I was trying to get back in the game, playing three forwards, but it didn't work. The bottom line is if I had to do this game all over again I would have done quite a few things differently. I will take full responsibility for losing this game."
Junior defender
Maximilian Aust (Pliezhausen, Germany/Wuerttemberg Gym), who played very well in GCU's 2-0 win over Western Washington University on Tuesday in Bellingham, Wash., missed today's game due to a hamstring injury. Two other defenders, junior
Nick Sykes (Boise, ID/Mountain View) and sophomore
Chris Green (Phoenix, AZ/Thunderbird) stepped up for the 'Lopes in Aust's absence.
It was GCU's last non-league game before turning its attention back to the PacWest title chase, which continues with a match against Dixie State at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, at the GCU Soccer Field. The Antelopes are in first place in the conference standings, followed by Hawai'i Pacific (6-2-0), Dixie State (4-3-1) and Notre Dame de Namur (4-1-0).
Hawai'i Pacific lost 1-0 to Dominican today in Kaneohe, Hawaii, giving GCU a little breathing room.
Three of the 'Lopes remaining six games are against Academy of Art and Chaminade, which have a combined 4-10 conference record.
Entering today's contest, GCU had outscored opponents 31-8 this season, led by the 14 goals of Ciliento. Senior goalkeeper
Ben Paneccasio (Sydney, Australia/Rosebank College, Tyler Junior College) had six shutouts, including the victory over Western Washington. SPU had won four of its past five games, had blanked four opponents and had an 11-3-3 advantage in the all-time series with GCU, including the past two meetings.
On Oct. 12, 2009 in Phoenix, the No. 25-ranked Falcons beat the No. 17-ranked 'Lopes 1-0 on a goal in the 51st minute by Schultz. Schultz led SPU with eight goals last season. He went on a hot streak earlier this season, recording four goals and two assists in six games between Sept. 15-Oct. 6.
