Grand Canyon men's tennis team lost its first match of the season in its first competition in 22 years.
The Antelopes, which debuted with the men's program this year, fell to No. 27 BYU-Hawaii 7-2 Tuesday at Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, Ariz. Grand Canyon picked up a pair of default wins at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.
GCU's Brian Kirby lost to Manu BajPai, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Jon Przybyl (pictured) fell to Agnec Peter, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2.
"To say the least, it was a tough way for the newly-reinstated men's tennis team to start off their season, but they went about it with the right attitude," GCU first-year men's coach Greg Prudhomme said. "I think they learned a lot."
Prudhomme said Kirby got BYU's attention when he was serving up a break, 3-2, in the second set of the longest match of the day on the men's side.
"I couldn't be happier with the day against one of the toughest teams in the country, and trust that if they keep the hustle and determination up, they will continue to grow as a team."
GCU hosts Hawai'i at Hilo at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.
