GCU Shuts Out Notre Dame de Namur
Junior goalkeeper Mileena Buchei (pictured, Stansbury, UT/Grantsville) had four saves to lead the Grand Canyon University (GCU) women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Notre Dame de Namur (NDNU) yesterday in Belmont, Calif.
The Antelopes improved their record to 4-3-1, 1-1-1 in the Pacific West Conference. The Argonauts dropped to 2-5, 2-1.
The game was evenly played until the 33rd minute, when junior forward Kayla Poe (Mesa, AZ/Dobson) received a pass from senior midfielder/forward Nichole Elias (Tucson, AZ/Saguaro) at the top of the box and driled a shot toward the net. It deflected off an Argo defender, changed direction and rolled past goalkeeper Kelsey Baxter. It was Poe's third goal of the season.
Elias, who scored two goals vs. Academy of Art University on Saturday to rally GCU for a 2-2, double-overtime draw, was named to the PacWest Women's Soccer Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll for game played Sept. 21-17.
NDNU had several opportunities to tie the game in the second half, including a late free kick by midfielder Samantha Paetz, but could not get the ball past Buchei.
GCU had an 18-8 shot advantage for the game, but Baxter kept the Argos close, making a career-high 12 saves.
Buchei, meanwhile, recorded her fourth win of the season.
The 'Lopes play Dominican University tomorrow at 2 p.m. at San Rafael, Calif.
