GCU Loses Thriller, 3-2
Senior midfielder/forward Kaylen Jackson (pictured, Tucson, AZ/Amphitheater) scored two goals, but they weren't enough as the Grand Canyon University (GCU) women's soccer team lost a thriller to Dominican University, 3-2, yesterday at San Rafael, Calif.
Jackson now has four goals for the season, tied for the fourth most in the Pacific West Conference. She also ranks first in shots (38) and shots per game (4.75), sixth in points (9), tied for sixth in goals per game (0.50) and ninth in points per game (1.12).
The Antelopes dropped to 4-4-1, 1-2-1 in the PacWest. Dominican is 3-4-2, 1-1-1.
The Lady Penguins scored first when forward Stephanie Malone intercepted a clear by GCU junior goalkeeperMileena Buchei (Stansbury, UT/Grantsville) and crossed it to midfielder Eleanna Manedz, who found the back of the net just 2:02 into the game.
A minute and a half later, Jackson chipped the ball over Dominican goalkeeper Alicia Paulsen to tie the score. Neither team scored the remainder of the half.
Just 36 seconds into the second period, however, Jackson scored her second goal. But Malone, a freshman, refused to be outdone. She scored two goals within a minute of each other, at the 67- and 68-minute marks, the former off an assist from Mary Wheeler.
For the game, the 'Lopes outshot the Lady Penguins, 7-6, and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
GCU returns home to face BYU-Hawaii (4-1, 2-1) at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the GCU Soccer Field.
