Brigham Young University Hawaii defender Brenna Rhoades drilled a shot from the right side in the 74th minute to score the only goal in the game as the Grand Canyon University women's soccer team lost to BYU-Hawaii, 1-0, Saturday at the GCU Soccer Field.
The Antelopes now are 4-5-1 overall, 1-3-1 in the Pacific West Conference. The Seasiders are 5-1, 3-1.
The teams played a scoreless first half, with the 'Lopes having a 4-3 advantage in shots. BYU-Hawaii stepped up the offensive pressure in the second half, however, getting off nine shots to GCU's four. Rhoades scored off an assist by midfielder Natasha Aiono.
Seasiders goalkeeper Becky Ploeger had five saves in recording the shutout.
Despite the loss, two GCU players were named to the PacWest Women's Soccer Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll for games played Sept. 28-Oct. 4. Senior midfielder/forward Kaylen Jackson (pictured, Tucson, AZ/Amphitheater)scored two goals and totaled four points for the 'Lopes, scoring both goals in a tough, 3-2 loss at Dominican on Sept. 30. Junior forward Kayla Poe (Mesa, AZ/Dobson) tallied the game-winning goal in GCU's 1-0 win at Notre Dame de Namur on Sept. 28.
The 'Lopes host Hawaii-Hilo at 5 p.m. Thursday at the GCU Soccer Field.
