Russell joined the GCU volleyball program on June 7, 2021 and begins his second season as a graduate assistant in 2023.

Russell competed for four seasons as an outside hitter at Penn State from 2010 to 2014. He started for three years, helping his team win the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Conference Championships and qualify for the NCAA National Semifinals for all four years. He was named to the 2013 EIVA All-Tournament team and was named second team All-Conference in 2013 and 2014.

At the conclusion of his collegiate career, Russell competed for TV Ingersoll Buehl in the First Division of the German Bundesliga from 2015 to 2016. He helped his team qualify for the German Club Cup Final for the first time in history as well as helping the team qualify for League Playoffs.

Russell has coached at both the club and collegiate level, most recently serving as a Volunteer Assistant Coach for the Stevenson men's volleyball team during the 2021 season. He has also worked as the Maryland Juniors Volleyball Club's Technical Coach and Assistant Coach for Elite Girls Teams since 2017. From 2016-17 he was the Head Coach for the Girls East Team of the Metro Volleyball Club and from 2014-15 he served as the Assistant Coach for the Boys 18-1 Team at the Annapolis Volleyball Club.

Russell earned his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Penn State, graduating in December of 2020. He has completed his USA Volleyball SafeSport Certification and is the co-host and content creator of Four to Four Volleyball Podcast.
