In his first season with the program, Toben played a major role in the Lopes' success.Â
After the departure of coach Matt Werle, coach Bryan Dell'Amico and Jon Girten split roles to lead the program the rest of the season. Toben assisted Girten and Dell'Amico in a season where the team surpassed expectations from many. The Lopes had an AVCA All-American (Trent Moser) along with five individual MPSF honors. The team had a .308 team hitting percentage, ranking 13th in the country and 3rd in program history. Toben helped coach the Lopes to the program's first sweep over UCLA as well as the first time GCU has won back-to-back matches at Stanford in program history.
Toben joins GCU after a successful coaching career spanning six years across both boys' and girls' volleyball. A former player for Arizona Fear Volleyball Club, Toben helped the team secure a third-place finish at nationals during their 18s year. This experience laid the groundwork for a collegiate career at Morningside University in Sioux City, IA, where he served as a four-year captain and starter, setting the program record for single-game assists and assists per set.
As a coach, Toben has guided teams to podium finishes at national qualifiers and at nationals.
