Kononov is in his second season as a graduate assistant for the men's and women's tennis programs.
Kononov born in Tallin, Estonia started playing college tennis at Armstrong State University in Georgia. In two seasons at the Division II school, Kononov finished with 56 match wins which ranks 18th all-time in Armstrong State history. He was also ranked as high as No. 12 and No. 5 in singles and doubles in Division II.
After his sophomore year Kononov transferred to UMBC for one season. While at UMBC he was ranked as high as No. 58 in the ITA Men's Singles Rankings. In the final rankings of 2015 Kononov was ranked at No. 7 in the Atlantic region which was the highest ranking for a UMBC tennis player in school history. That season he went 10-4 at the number one singles position with two wins over ranked opponents.
His final season of tennis came at the University of San Diego where amassed a 9-7 record in singles and a 8-8 record in doubles. The Toreros were ranked as high as No. 16 in the country that season and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
