Dr. Kimberly Sims begins her sixth season as Grand Canyon University's head men's and women's cross country coach and third as an assistant track and field coach.
Dr. Sims, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from GCU in 1994, had 10 years of high school coaching experience at Glendale Cactus, Peoria Sunrise Mountain, Goodyear Desert Edge and Buckeye Verrado prior to resurrecting the Antelopes' cross country program in 2006.
Dr. Sims ran cross country and track for a year at NCAA Division I UC-Irvine in 1991-92 before finishing her studies at Grand Canyon University, where she competed at the club level. She ran cross country at Yavapai Junior College in 1988-89, both years in which her team won National Junior College Athletic Association Region I championships and advanced to the NJCAA Championships. She also ran track at Glendale Community College in 1990-91, where she earned titles in the 3,000 meters, 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters and as a member of the 4x800 relay team.
Dr. Sims has guided a number of cross country athletes to various awards on the course and in the classroom. Among those are:
2009: Julio Zuniga earned 2nd Team All-PacWest Men’s Cross Country.
2010: Kipkorir Mutai earned All-West Region for NCAA Division II, 1st Team All-PacWest and Runner of the Week for October 4, 2010; Julio Zuniga earned 2nd Team All-PacWest Men’s Cross Country.
2011: Kipkorir Mutai earned All-Academic, 1st Team All-PacWest, Runner of the Week for September 26, 2011 and for October 10, 2011; Sharles Simon earned 1st Team All-PacWest; Megan Young earned 2nd Team All-PacWest.
2012: Kipkorir Mutai earned Capital One Academic All-District Team in recognition of his accomplishments as a college scholar-athlete who excels in both academics and athletics.
An Arizona native, Dr. Sims was a four-year varsity cross country and track athlete at Cactus High School. She earned her doctorate in Education Leadership and Teacher Innovation from Arizona State University in 2010 and received her master’s degree in Special Education from ASU in 2001 while coaching at Sunrise Mountain. She still actively competes in road races.
Dr. Sims and her husband, Matt, live in Goodyear with their son, Wyatt.
