PULLMAN, Wash. — Grand Canyon took leads in the seventh, ninth and 10th innings but dropped a 6-5, 10-inning thriller to Washington State on Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
A dramatic game featured five ties and seven lead changes, with runs scored in each of the final five half-innings.
The Lopes (8-16, 0-2 MW) took their first lead with a two-run seventh inning. Freshman third baseman
Jose Lopez III reached on a leadoff hit and eventually scored on a Washington State error. GCU took a 3-2 lead when back-to-back batters were hit by pitches, including one by graduate catcher
Mito Perez with the bases loaded.
Washington State (10-12, 3-2 MW) responded when a leadoff walk came around to score on a one-out single in the bottom of the eighth.
GCU reclaimed its lead in the ninth in emphatic fashion. Junior left fielder
Carson Ohland lifted the first pitch he saw to deep right to put the Lopes ahead 4-3. It was the first homer of the season for the native of Maple Valley, Washington.
The Cougars tied the game again in the bottom of the ninth. A leadoff single moved to second on an error, to third on a productive out and scored on a well-placed bunt. Washington State threatened to win it in the ninth, but sophomore
Gunnar Penzkover — who moved from center field to left field to begin the inning — threw out the potential winning run at the plate.
GCU took another lead in the 10th. Junior right fielder
Billy Scaldeferri doubled and eventually scored on a bases-loaded walk to put the Lopes in front 5-4.
Washington State opened the bottom of the 10th with the first three batters reaching base to load the bases. In the middle of that stretch, a potential double-play ball was mishandled in the GCU infield to extend the inning.
The Cougars scored the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly. With the potential winning run on third base and one out, GCU got the double-play ball it needed, but a speedy baserunner beat the throw to first to seal the walk-off.
Four errors contributed to GCU's loss, leading to three unearned runs. The Lopes allowed just three earned runs in 9 2/3 innings.
GCU finished 0 for 11 with runners in scoring position, leaving multiple opportunities on the table.
Lopes junior left-hander
Chase Frey struck out six in 4 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run. Junior
Nicholas Robb and senior
Cam Cunnings each yielded one earned run in their 3 2/3 and 1 2/3 innings of work, respectively.
Three GCU batters had multi-hit days, led by Lopez, who followed up Friday's performance with another two-hit game. Penzkover and Scaldeferri also recorded two hits apiece, and all three delivered an extra-base hit.
GCU will look to get in the win column in MW play in Sunday's noon finale at Washington State.
