The Grand Canyon women's tennis team defeated Saint Mary's in a clean 4-0 sweep Saturday at GCU Tennis Facility. The 48th-ranked Lopes (7-5) get a huge win after tying their highest national ranking ever.
Starting in doubles, the Lopes dominated the Gaels with only two games lost. GCU senior Dani Deaifi and sophomore
Bella Crossman got the job finished first on Court 1, winning 6-1.
Immediately after that, the freshman pair of
Hams Metwally and Amalia Suciu did the same. They defeated Elif Tuana Gunal and Madison Weekly of the Gaels 6-1, clinching the doubles point for the Lopes.
Singles play started with an immediate point to the Lopes after Saint Mary's forfeited the match on Court 6.
With the 2-0 lead in the dual match, Deaifi went to work on Court 4 defeating Sydney Wilson 6-1, 6-3.
Following that win, GCU junior
Gala Arangio won 6-1, 6-3 on Court 3 to secure the 4-0 match sweep. The rest of the matches were left unfinished.
Grand Canyon will have a two-week break before it is back at GCU Tennis Facility to take on Mountain West foe San José State on March 13.
