Grand Canyon could not recover from a fast start by Oklahoma State, falling 13-2 Sunday at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark as the Cowboys claimed the four-game series.
The Lopes won Thursday's opener 12-8 before dropping the final three games to Oklahoma State, a program that has qualified for 12 straight NCAA Tournaments. The Cowboys won a weekend series in Phoenix for the first time since 1993 after GCU won three-game home series in 2017 and 2020.
GCU recorded two prompt outs in the top of the first inning, but Oklahoma State racked up five two-out hits and five two-out runs to grab a 5-0 advantage that put GCU on its heels. A three-run home run capped the frame.
The Lopes generated a spark in the third inning. Junior third baseman
Billy Scaldeferri continued his strong weekend at the plate, launching a two-out solo home run to left to get GCU on the scoreboard. The blast marked his second home run of a series in which he hit .500 (6 for 12).
Oklahoma State added to its lead with another four-run outburst in the fourth to go ahead 9-1.
GCU added its second run in the fourth inning by manufacturing some offense. Junior second baseman
Troy Sanders and freshman shortstop
Austin Owens worked walks to extend the inning, and junior catcher
Marcus Galvan delivered a two-out RBI single to right field to bring Sanders home.
Oklahoma State answered every GCU push, tacking on a run in the sixth before putting the game away with a three-run seventh inning. The Cowboys finished with 12 hits, five of the extra-base variety.
In addition to Scaldeferri's .500 hitting in the series, junior first baseman
Cannon Peery also delivered multiple extra-base hits and finished the series with two homers and five RBIs. The Lopes totaled six home runs in the series.
Owens made his first collegiate start and was steady fielding his position at shortstop, while freshmen
Andrew Cohen and
Landon Sloan made their college debuts on the mound.
Next, GCU will leave the state for the first time with a two-game midweek set at UC Irvine. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. (Phoenix time) on Tuesday.
