Son of Ryan and Jill Owens.
Father, Ryan, was a standout baseball player at Cal State Fullerton, ranking 10th in career home runs (34), RBIs (163) and slugging percentage (.581). Played for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. Was drafted out of high school in the 13th round of the 1996 MLB Draft by the Florida Marlins. Drafted again out of college as a seventh-round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1999. Played six seasons in affiliated baseball, reaching as high as Triple-A. Passed away in 2018. Austin cites his dad as his biggest personal influence on his baseball career: "Taught me everything and a love for the sport."
Sister, Alexis, was a dancer at Cal State Fullerton.
Brother, Ian McCloskey, played basketball at UC Santa Cruz.
Off the field, enjoys mountain and dirt biking, playing other sports, camping and hiking.
