GCU secured their 7th victory yesterday against the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona. After losing the doubles point in a nail biter, the Lopes completely dominated, winning all but one of their singles matches.
Â
Starting off doubles play, sophomore ranked duo
Tristan Berard and
Andreas Loizas (74th in the nation) continued their winning ways securing their match 6-1.
Â
The Lopes dropped the rest of their doubles matches, ultimately losing the point.
Â
GCU started off the singles match on fire, winning the first set on every court except for one.
Â
Junior
Brice Patoux got the momentum rolling defeating Ivan Perisic of NAU 6-1, 7-6 (7-4 in a tiebreaker). This brings Patoux to a perfect 8-0 in the season in singles play.
Â
Over on Court 2 Loizas picked up another win 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
Â
"When the work you put in every day pays off it's a different feeling, I enjoy playing with this team and my mindset never changes" said Loizas.
Â
Diordan Macabbad, the sophomore from Melourne, Australia, picked up another win to put the Lopes within one match of clinching. He defeated Takumi Katsuda 6-3 in the first set before falling 2-6 in the second. He went on to win the third set 6-3.
Â
On his first time playing in Court 1 for the season, Berard clinched the match for the Lopes defeating Noa Tcherniack 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Â
That win brings the reigning Mountain West Athlete of the Week to 7-1 on the season in singles play.
Â
With that win the Lopes advance to 7-1 on the season, Loizas was asked about what this team means to him and the historic start they've had.
Â
"Me and the team are hungry for more, we want to break more records," said Loizas. "I love this team, every guy on the team understands what our coaches want us to do and we are one big family.
